About Chania Airport

Chania International Airport “Daskalogiannis”, the international airport in the city that is sited near Souda Bay on the Akrotiri peninsula. The airport was built in 1954 at Maleme and served only domestic flights. In 1959, it was shifted to its current location. The airport is named after Daskalogiannis, a wealthy shipbuilder who led the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule in the 18th century. Handling around 3 million passengers throughout the year, Chania International Airport is the 6th busiest airport in Greece[ii].
